Legacy

P14377C1T149#yIS1 The product of a Fae Lord or Lady and pretty much anything from the material plane is a Faery.

Now and again a Fae or Fell Lord will entertain a human or elf or even a goblin. What comes from that is always a Faery. Tiny, trapped in a world far larger than them, and having to navigate it without the boon of the Fairywilde, Faery are perhaps the most overlooked people.

Faery are tiny winged Semihumans. They do not do well in crowds if they are on the ground, they do not get along well with pets who often see them as food, and they are very cautious about birds, especially eagles.

Faery adopt a very different approach to that of Therians: they work hard to be seen and noticed and they do not have much patience or tolerance for those who ignore them. Being ignored when you are this small is a fast trip to a broken wing or worse.

Tradition

Faery parents pass on the mortal heritage to their Children, though some are shown tips and tricks to navigating the Fairywilde should the need arise. Faery are generally unwelcome in the parent’s dimension, but they are not normally hunted, which is at least a partial blessing.

Faery parents may or may not stick around, and usually the child is raised by either adoptive parents or a single parent – sometimes with a stepparent.

Because of their size, and the perception of them as weak and at risk, often Faery are raised without much contact with anyone beyond their caregivers, and this can sometimes create friction while at other times it creates a great and enduring bond.

The direction of that bond – either hostile or caring – can influence the development of values, and the occasional influence of the Fairywilde doubtlessly has additional impact. Faery are not fond of constraints, tend towards being assertive in order to be heard, seen, and respected. Some would argue that Faery are the most neglected of all the peoples, and the usual response to that is going to be just go home and it will be over.

As a result, Faery are often willing to work with and alongside others but are slow to trust or establish friendship. Many cities have small cluster of faery gangs, who watch out for each other and could be capricious – just as likely to filch your purse as they would be to finish a week’s worth of shoes overnight.

Faery tend to be strong in the arena of the Hearth, and are very much devoted to “creature comforts” in that they often have to make special modifications for their size.

Stigmas

The denizens of the Fairywilde are not trusted, and there is no more obviously linked to that group than the tiny, annoying, squeaky voiced, flittering pests than Faery. Faery get blamed for fairy gold, are expected to provide fairy ointment on demand, and are often told to go back where they belong. They are denied entry to shops for fear of pilfering and considered bad luck by many in the Empire.

Appearance

In height, they are on par for scale with both parents, though they’re neither as slender as Elfin nor as broad as humans, with women only slightly taller and heavier than men. Faery men do have facial hair, and sometimes grow beards to mask their Elfin ancestry. The Faery do not ever go bald. Their hair is typically longer than average and grows thick and fast. Faery almost always have a type 1 hair, and their ears are perky and pointed. They have oval faces with rounded features and slightly longer than normal necks. They are very small, and they are very dangerous.

Qualities

No matter their mortal parent, Faery are always very small, winged people – some say this was what all the inhabitants of Fairywilde looked like at one time. With different shapes to their wings, they can fly, but are only about a tenth as strong as their larger companions. You can speak either High Sylvan or Low Sylvan and can write in one language of your choice.

Special

Faery come in five types, according to some, but the only differences among them are their wings:

Dragonfly (four long translucent wings)

Butterfly (two broad opaque, two smaller opaque wings)

Moth (two broad opaque wings)

Wasp (two translucent wings, longer than body)

Cicada (four translucent wings, one broad, one narrow)

Flight

Because of your wings, you have a flying speed of 90.

This speed is reduced by the kind of Armor worn:

You have proficiency in Flying. You are able to hover.

One of the worst things that can happen to a Faery is to be grounded. Their size makes them slow.

Trait

All Faery produce what is called Fairy Dust. It comes from a thin film on their wings that they constantly generate, much like moths, and that gives them the strength to put up with much of the abuse that happens.

However, while Faery and Fae beings (including Elfin and Fay) are immune to the dust, others are not. The kind of wings determines the effect of the dust when they intentionally seek to rub it off so that it settles. Fairy dust can be collected by the faery, but only a faery can use it.

Dragonfly wings (four long translucent wings) spread sneezing dust.

Butterfly wings (two broad opaque, two smaller opaque wings) spread coughing dust.

Moth wings (two broad opaque wings) spread itching dust.

Wasp wings (two translucent wings, longer than body) spread stinging dust.

Cicada wings (four translucent wings, one broad, one narrow) spread muffling dust, reducing sound.

Dust’s effects last for 1 round per level and are conditions for the victim during that time. Faery can target 1 person per round with this dust as a Bonus Action.

Talent

Faery have Dodge as a bonus action.

Tell

Faery are size Small. When grounded, they have a walking Speed of 10. The Armor penalties still apply, but at 1/10th.
